Sir:-

I laid before the Marquess of Lansdowne your

letter of the 3rd instant transmitting a copy of a

letter from the Post Office on the subject of British

Postal Agencies in China.

I am directed by His Lordship to say that he

concurs with Mr. Chamberlain in thinking that the

Treasury might be urged to increase the Imperial

contribution towards the cost of these Agencies.

The improvement in the present, arrangements at

Shanghai appears specially desirable but

ship must leave it to Mr. Chamberlain to decide

His Lord-

whether the present time is opportune for inviting

the Lords Commissioners to augment the grant.

The Under Secretary of State,

Colonial Office.

I aun,

Sic,

Your most obedient,

humble Servant,

Francis Bertie
